Toolverge

Syllable Counter

A syllable counter breaks down how many syllables each word in your text has, useful for poetry, haiku, and pronunciation checks. Toolverge uses a vowel-group heuristic to estimate syllables per word and totals them across your whole passage.

How it works

  1. Paste a word, line, or paragraph into the box.
  2. Each word is scanned for runs of vowel letters (a, e, i, o, u, y), with a silent-e adjustment.
  3. A per-word table and a total/average summary appear below.

Formula Syllables per word ≈ count of consecutive vowel-letter groups, minus 1 for a trailing silent "e", floored at 1.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this syllable counter?

It uses a vowel-group heuristic, not a pronunciation dictionary, so most common English words are correct but some irregular words may be off by one.

Why is "cake" one syllable but "apple" two?

"Cake" has one vowel group after the silent-e adjustment; "apple" has two vowel groups (a, e) neither of which is a trailing silent e.

Can I use this for haiku or poetry?

Yes, it is commonly used to check the 5-7-5 syllable pattern in haiku or count meter in other poetic forms.

Does it handle punctuation?

Yes, punctuation is stripped from each word before counting so it does not affect the syllable count.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Counting runs entirely in your browser.
