How it works
- Paste your article, essay, or draft into the box.
- The tool counts words, sentences (split on . ! ?), and syllables (using a vowel-group heuristic).
- Both Flesch formulas run on those counts to produce a score, grade level, and plain-language label.
Formula Flesch Reading Ease = 206.835 - 1.015×(words/sentences) - 84.6×(syllables/words). Flesch-Kincaid Grade = 0.39×(words/sentences) + 11.8×(syllables/words) - 15.59.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good Flesch Reading Ease score?
Scores of 60-70 are considered standard, easily understood by 8th-9th graders; 90+ is very easy, and below 30 is very difficult.
What is the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level?
It estimates the U.S. school grade level needed to understand the text, based on the same word/sentence/syllable counts.
How are syllables counted?
By counting groups of consecutive vowels per word, with an adjustment for a trailing silent "e" — a heuristic, not a dictionary lookup.
Why does my score look off for very short text?
The formulas are designed for full sentences and paragraphs; a single word or fragment can produce a skewed score.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
